Table linens often carry grease, sauce, tea, and fruit stains. How to efficiently and consistently make them clean, crisp, and soft has always been a key challenge for the industry. It is not just “cleaning” but a scientific method integrated with laundry chemistry, mechanical action, and process management.

This article is based on practical industry experience and technical advantages of a Kingstar SHS-2100 100KG industrial washer. It provides a systematic solution for linen laundry plants and hotel laundries.

Laundry Steps

The following steps are based on washing white cotton table linens (85KG wash load).

Pre-treatment

Before loading, workers have to shake out the linens and clean food residues. During prewash, add a small amount of alkaline substances (such as 100g soda ash).

Shaking out can prevent fabrics from tangling and ensure even washing results. Cool or warm water and soda ash can initially loosen and suspend most particulate soils and some grease stains. This reduces burdens for the main wash, preventing soils from solidification in the high-temperature main wash.

Main wash

This is a key step to remove stains. It is important to set the proper chemical dosage sequence and temperature.

Add a water softener to bind calcium and magnesium ions (especially in areas with high water hardness). This prevents insoluble calcium soap deposits from forming on fabrics. And it reduces linen yellowing and hardening.

Add an emulsifier when the water temperature reaches 40-50℃. Under this temperature, its nonionic surfactant (below its cloud point) can completely wet and penetrate. It removes grease stains from fibers and emulsifies them into tiny particles.

When the water temperature is up to 70-80℃, add heavy-duty laundry powder (mainly contains anionic surfactant and alkaline builders). High temperature helps dissolve laundry powder. Stains can be thoroughly removed through emulsification and dispersion.

Bleaching & Disinfection

Chlorine bleach is effective on white table linens. The key is to separate the chlorine bleach into two parts and add them 3-5 minutes apart. This can effectively prevent bleach from reaching a high concentration inside the drum. Therefore, stain-causing pigments and residual organic stains can be decomposed evenly and gently. While achieving efficient bleaching performance, this step protects fabric strength. It also achieves disinfection results at a high temperature.

Rinse

Rinse 2-3 cycles with a high water level. After the second rinse, test the pH of the water. If it is almost neutral, reduce a rinse cycle to save water and energy. Rinse aims to thoroughly remove the residual laundry chemicals from fabrics. It is a key to making table linens skin-friendly, reducing the risk of allergic reactions, and avoiding accelerating fabric aging.

Neutralization & softening

At the last time to dose water, add a souring agent. It aims to neutralize the minimal residual alkaline on fabrics and restore them into a slightly acidic condition (pH value is 5.5-6.5). This makes fabrics comfortable as well as prevents hidden damage to cotton caused by residual alkalinity and extends linen service life. This step can also be combined with softening treatment.

Starching & extraction

According to the requirements of hotels, use starching treatment. Starch forms a protective layer on the fabric surface. This makes table linens crisp and smooth after ironing. And it improves soil-release performance. The high-speed extraction minimizes the residual moisture content, preparing for the following efficient drying and ironing.

Flexible Adjustment

Stubborn grease stains

If grease stains are still not removed, carefully add a small amount of liquid sodium hydroxide in addition to heavy-duty laundry powder during the main wash. Use the saponification reaction to remove grease stains. However, the dosage should be controlled strictly. Excessive or frequent dosage may lead to fabric graying.

Colorful table linens

The main wash temperature should be under 70-80℃. Replace chlorine bleach with gentle oxygen bleach and add it with the main wash chemicals. For new colorful table linens, the initial wash should be in warm water. And perform a color-release treatment without chemicals.

Water quality adaptation

For washing the above white cotton table linens, the water hardness reaches 350ppm. It is necessary to add a water softener. The dosage relies on the water quality.

The Advantage of Kingstar Industrial Washer

Every step (temperature control, water level, processing time, and spin speed) has high requirements for the equipment capacity. Take the Kingstar SHS-2100 100KG industrial washer as an example. It is designed to transfer complex laundry chemistry into stable and repeatable washing performance.

Its built-in smart control system allows operators to program and store the above steps. It supports precisely set water level, temperature, time, and spin speed of each step. For instance, it can control the main wash temperature curve (from 40℃ to 80℃). This ensures emulsifiers and laundry powder are introduced at the correct temperature point. This equipment can also control the extraction acceleration. It achieves low moisture content and protects fabric fibers.

Q&A

Q1: Why should the laundry shop add soda ash during the pre-wash? And why should the water softener be added prior to other chemicals during the main wash?

A1: Soda ash is added during the pre-wash. This helps build a mildly alkaline environment at a low temperature. It can loosen grease and solid dirt, preparing for the next deep cleaning. Adding a water softener during the main wash is to bind calcium and magnesium ions before the water temperature rises and other chemicals begin to act. It can prevent these ions from reacting with detergents and forming insoluble calcium soap deposits. The deposit is the main cause of white fabric graying, yellowing, and hardness after long-term laundry.

Q2: Why should laundry shops add chlorine bleach twice? Can oxygen bleach be used directly?

A2: Because chlorine bleach disperses quickly throughout the wash liquor. This can prevent a spot with high concentration. It can also reduce the risks of spot fabric damage caused by severe oxidation in a short time. Chlorine bleach has strong oxidizability. It has better bleach and stain-removal performance. But it only applies to white cotton linens. For colorful table linens or fabrics which are sensitive to chlorine, use the gentle oxygen bleach (hydrogen peroxide) and lower the washing temperature.

Q3: How to know whether the rinse is thorough or not? Is rinsing three times necessary?

A3: The method is to check the pH value and conductivity of rinsing water. After the second rinse, check the pH of the drain water. If it is near neutral (around pH 7), residual chemicals are very low. The third rinse can be adjusted or skipped. This helps save water and energy.

In the hotel linen laundry industry, the washing performance of table linens is essential to a laundry plant’s professionalism.
